My grandfather got the telescope from a friend who I believe bought the mirror rather than made it. The whole telescope is homemade except for the mirror and lenses (of course). He used some sort of blue print of it, but that was two score years before my time, so I have no clue which designs he used! I really wish to have met the man who made it, but he passed on before my time as well.

When I was young, I built a grinding machine, and made several mirrors and telescopes. After seeing yours, I wish I was young again. Thanks for stopping by, and sharing.

Just did some research, to refresh my memory. Your telescope is of a Newtonain design. (a main mirror, and a diagonal mirror) The name Dobsonian comes from the designer of the mount. It’s an interesting story–he is a priest with limited funds, and the traditional mount was very expensive. Using scrap materials, he designed this ingenious mount, that has become the standard.
