You’re right about that! The values in the one I copied were super close, and what initially looked like black to me was actually a dark, warm grey. Takes a lot of looking to figure out what’s going on.
I loved the painting, though, because when I looked at it, I felt like I was looking into a real nighttime scene, and that was just a reproduction in a book.

Yeah, I really like some of Whistler’s nocturnes. I did a copy of one a while back.

Yale owns one of them, spent many hours looking, He makes it look easy, but we know it isn’t easy !!!!
